Homage to Christo and Jeanne-Claude
We were involved in just three of the late Christo and Jeanne-Claude Christo’s art installation projects. An up close, in-depth experience with the artist on the last project he managed personally: The Floating Piers, some 2 miles plus of floating orange-fabric-covered pontoon traversing Lake Iso, Italy.
The year was 2016. The weather was blue and beautiful, as only Italian lakes can be. I wangled credential to the press corps. It was fabulous to be right there within a few feet of him, asking questions, photographing ever gesture and expression.
We don’t forget Surrounded Islands, “waterlilies” floating in Miami Bay, my first experience with Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and with the late Colorado engineer who helped them realize projects—Ted Dougherty.
Karl and I spent two weeks in New York during The Gates project. New York has not looked so good since.
